About the winery

Salabka is a vineyard track in Troja, Prague. It consists of four vineyards, the first records of its existence date back to 1224-1233. In the 16th and 18th centuries, the name Salaba first appears among its owners, but it was not until the 18th century that it was named after its owner, Jan Kašpar Salaba. Later, the vineyard was closed down and was not used for many years. The modern history of the Salabka vineyard began in 1954-1955, when the vineyard was restored by the newly established State Farm of the Capital City of Prague. The south-western part of the vineyard with the now unknown clone of Riesling has been preserved as a uniqueness from this period. After restitution, in the second half of the 1990s, the Salabka estate in its devastated state was acquired by the company Zlatá Praha spol. s r.o., which gradually started its regeneration in cooperation with the National Heritage Institute and with the help of grants from the capital city. In 2000, the Salabka vineyard was also substantially revitalised. In 2012-2014, seedlings of some traditional and old varieties, especially Pinot Noir, Viognier and others, were imported from Burgundy in France. At present, the vineyards are replanted with 2000 plantings of Riesling, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Müller Thurgau, Scheurebe, Neronet and Hibernal, and in 2011-2013, Chardonnay, Muscat of Moravia, Johanniter, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Tramin, Sylvan Green and special clones of Pinot Noir from Burgundy were added. Professor Vilém Kraus was a major contributor to the revitalisation. Today, the 4.5 ha Salabka vineyard is the largest in Prague and thanks to its stable climatic conditions, location on the southern slopes and specific soil composition, it produces excellent wines. The vines are not only grown here, but also processed after the grapes are hand-picked. On the site of the historic Salabka estate, the company Zlatá Praha Salabka s.r.o. opened a new Salabka Winery and Restaurant in 2014 and the 1st Prague Distillery in 2015.
