Moravian wines excelled in Spain, bringing home 44 medals from Madrid.

From a total of 44 medals that were awarded to Moravian wines during the evaluation held between 25th and 28th April in the elegant premises of the Casino de Madrid there were 4 great gold, 22 gold and 18 silver medals.  The Czech Republic has thus been ranked among the most successful entrants alongside the host nation Spain and neighbouring Portugal.  As is traditional this was achieved on an international level by the long successful southern Moravian B\V Winery from Ratíškovice.

“At B\V Winery we subject everything to quality control and maximum care of the vineyards, the grapes and the wine itself.  On top of this every wine takes its own time.  So we send wines to the competition that are not yet ready to go on sale, thus verifying their quality in the midst of tough international competition.  We are also very pleased to note that the wines matured in French oak barrels have been successful,“ said cellar master Jiří Toman.  The winery has earned all of the four great gold medals and in addition to these a further ten gold and fourteen silver medals have been awarded.  Their Pinot Blanc barrique reserva, special selection of grapes 2019, was rated as the best wine from the Czech Republic.  

“I have had the honour of being part of an international jury composed of judges coming from thirty countries for the seventh time and of presiding over one of the committees for the fourth time.  The medal successes and good name of the Czech Republic in this contest are confirmed by the fact that for the first time in history there were four judges present in the evaluation jury who represented our country.  Along with myself we had Josef Valihrach Jr. from the winery of the same name, Tereza Helmová from the Kolby winery and Martin Šmíd, senior sommelier from the Znovín Znojmo winery,“  this is how Miroslav Majer, judge and director of the DAVINUS company, summarised events before adding on the high standard of the competition: “This famous competition is very professionally organised by the Union of Spanish Wine Tasters under the supervision of its director, Señor Fernando Gurucharri Jaque.  Patronage by OIV and participation in the list of VINOFED’s grand-slam competitions are a matter of course for this event and a long-term standard.“

This is the twentieth anniversary in the history of this contest and no other wine event in Spain has managed to gather together so large a selection of specialists who in turn combine such a high level of professionalism and so many years of experience in their various fields.  The competition under the direction of the Union of Spanish Wine Tasters comes under the patronage of the OIV (the International Organisation of Vine and Wine) and is included on the list of the most prestigious of VINOFED’s world wine competitions.
