Outstanding Success for Moravian and Czech Wines at a Prestigious International Competition in Montréal

Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada is the largest international wine competition in the Americas, and this year’s edition brought a distinctive evaluation process. The jury, composed of twelve panels of oenologists, journalists, and wine professionals, noted an exceptionally high overall quality among the submitted wines, which led to an adjustment of the medal thresholds.

The project was funded by the Ministry of Agriculture as part of the Economic Diplomacy Support Program.

The Czech Republic has reaffirmed its position on the global wine map, bringing home 1 Grand Gold and 12 Gold Medals from Montréal. The Grand Gold Medal was awarded to Vinařství Volařík for its Johanniter, Selection of Grapes, 2024.

“The results from Montréal demonstrate the consistency and quality of our wines in strong international competition. A 30% success rate clearly shows that Czech winemaking has much to offer even in markets traditionally dominated by producers such as Portugal, France, Italy, and Spain,” said national sommelier Klára Kollárová, who participated in the evaluation as a tasting judge.

“Canada is a complex market — each region has different companies handling wine import and sales, and consumer attitudes and openness to new wines vary significantly. However, Quebec is known for being an open and dynamic market. Its gastronomic scene is full of global flavors, which creates great opportunities for our wines,” explained Klára Kollárová. She added that it was extremely valuable to understand the system firsthand, but especially to present the wines directly to the individual buyers with whom she sat on the judging panels.

“Our wines were very well received not only during the masterclass, but also at the post competition event, which brought together 50 buyers, sommeliers, and influencers from the province of Quebec,” shared Klára Kollárová, describing her experience at a competition where not only wines, but also sake and non alcoholic wines were evaluated.

Given the above average quality of the entries and the high standards required for awards this year, the jury decided not to award any Silver Medals (usually 87–88 points). Wines could therefore receive only the two highest distinctions: Gold Medal (from 89 points) and Grand Gold Medal (from 93 points). This raised both the prestige and value of the awarded medals. “Had Silver Medals been awarded, our wines would have earned another thirteen,” added Klára Kollárová.

The Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada is an international competition with a jury of 12 panels comprising oenologists, journalists and business people from around the world. The competition is known for its rigor and is one of the most prestigious in its field, with a large representation of European wines.
