Welschriesling Championship 2025 - information for winemakers

After the great successes of recent years, we are pleased to invite you to the Wöschmeisterschaft 2025! In cooperation with Team Wein Burgenland under the leadership of Christian Zechmeister, the competition is moving to Burgenland for the first time. We are proud and grateful for this opportunity offered by Christian. Sample registration until 15 June 2025.

The Wöschmeisterschaft is more than just a competition and not just a tasting - it is a platform to strengthen theWelschriesling, to introduce new trends and to show the international wine world the enormous potential of this grape variety.

It is possible to enter Welsch Rieslings in the well-known categories 'Klassik', 'Rieden' and 'Prädikate ab Beerenauslese'. The 'Nouvelle Wösch' category is for high-quality wines that do not carry a vineyard designation. We have reserved this category for wines that can be clearly categorised as 'Natural/Orange/Amphora'. And, of course, we also offer a "Sparkling Wine" category - most sparkling wines must be vinified from Riesling.

What's new?

In addition to the competition, we'll be hosting a symposium for winemakers and wine lovers, featuring a panel discussion on Riesling. The discussion will focus on the possibilities and prospects for the future of this fascinating variety. Join us to discuss the opportunities, challenges and proper positioning of this variety. A valuable exchange of ideas where you will gain inspiration and take away new ideas.

Symposium: Welschriesling 360°: Tradition. Innovation. The future.

Member of our jury over the years

We are delighted to count the best of the best on our tasting panel, such as Alexander Koblinger MS (Döllerer's Weinhandelshaus & Genusswelten), Stefan Neumann MS (Wine Director by Heston Blumenthal UK), Marco Franzelin (Sommelier 3* Schloss Schauenstein), Harald Scholl (ŠEditor of Vinum magazine), Daniela Dejnega (Gault Millau Austria), Willi Balanjuk (A la Carte), Peter Moser (Falstaff), Maximilian Zankl (Sommelier Restaurant Obauer), André Drechsel (Sommelier Tian) and many other renowned wine experts.

The wines will be tasted and evaluated in a tasting according to an internationally established point system. The results will be announced after the tasting in a press release and on social media.

When will the Wöschmeisterschaft take place?

The semi-final tasting will take place on 29 June and the final tasting on 30 June. The venue will be the premises of Wein Burgenland in Donnerskirchen.

Wine categories to be entered

- Klassik,
- Rieden (single vineyard),
- Prädikate ab Beerenauslese (everything up to TBA i.e. Trockenbeerenauslese, a selection of dried berries),
- Nouvelle Wösch (a separate category for high quality wines without vineyard designation. These wines are not classical in taste, they do not have a vineyard on the label, but they are nevertheless distinguished by their origin),
- Sparkling wine (at least 50 % of Riesling; pet-nats are also allowed),
- Natural, orange wines, produced in amphorae.

In addition to the category winners, tasters can choose their personal "Coup de Coeur", i.e. their favourite wines, which will be awarded separately. In addition, we will issue special trophies for the winners of each country.
