Sonberk Winery, a.s. Popice was founded in 2003. It continued the tradition of an ancient vineyard producing royal wines on its vineyard. Shortly after its establishment, it was ranked among the important wineries of the Pálava hills and the whole Moravia. This winery is one of the modern and progressive wineries that set the trend and direction of the production of "Moravian wine".
The construction of the new winery building, which was approved in May 2008 and was built according to the design of the famous architect Josef Pleskot, has contributed to its great visibility.
The winery tries to create wine with its own signature by combining the earth and the sun on the Sonberk vineyard, and they are very successful. The Sonberk loess vineyard, founded as early as the 13th century, with its unique view of the most beautiful dominant feature of Moravia - the Mesozoic Pálava Mountains - is a place with a real genius loci. The winery creates a modern history from a unique place, a unique vineyard and the handwriting of people creating with their hearts. On more than 40 hectares, it grows mainly Riesling, Palava and Traminer in an environmentally friendly way. From hand-harvested own grapes, it produces
up to 150,000 bottles of white, appellation-only wines characterized by distinctive fruitiness, original juiciness, high minerality and exciting spiciness.
The winery has long benefited from the cooperation of the renowned viticulturist Roman Slok and the cellar master of a prominent winemaking family, Oldřich Drápal Jr.
The winery has reaped many successes with its wines at domestic and international competitions and exhibitions. Sonberk is the holder of the platinum medal Best in Show in the category of dry aromatic wines, as well as the platinum medal Best in Category in the regional category of sweet wines and the International Award Best Dry White Wine of Central and Eastern Europe from the most prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards. It received 91 points in the American Wine & Spirits as one of the best wines of Europe. It is listed annually in the Wine Salon - the 100 best wines of the Czech Republic. It was the overall winner of the 2013 Winery of the Year competition.
