About event

The striking of the mountain is an old custom, most often taking place at the end of August. It is the locking of the vineyards. Only the winemaker or the vineyard owner and the so-called hotaurs, who protect the vineyard from thieves and starlings, are allowed to enter the vineyard after the mountain has been staked.

Pregnant women and the sick can pluck three grapes of wine to refresh themselves on a hot day. Violation of the ban was punishable by severe penalties and the thief could be shot by the watchman. Today it is more of a fun folklore festival and a tribute to the vigneron for his year-round work in the vineyard. However, it is still the case that grapes are not cut or tasted without the winemaker's permission. The Mount's Striking takes place on Saturday 16 August in Vinck Square. At 7 pm, a dulcimer band will play in front of the government headquarters. Refreshments provided.
